Painting II   4.00   01/14/2019   05/11/2019   Studio

This course is about the chemistry of different kinds of paints—acrylic, oil, watercolor and pastel—so that they can be used separately and layered, with confidence, on particular supports. Students learn where pigments come from, how paints are made, and how to read archival and safety symbols on professional artists paint tubes. Students create various glazed paintings, alla prima paintings, and combinations of them. The course emphasizes color and its relation to value, explored by creating all-white and all-black paintings with various values, textures, and hues. Students are encouraged to use digital, slide, and photocopy images as a method of arriving at scale and creating compositions. Open to non-majors.
