The focus of the course is to develop an understanding of administration, management, and leadership. Candidates learn the significance of the principal promoting the success of all students since the central responsibility of the principalship is to improve teaching and learning." Emphasis is placed on the relationship-building skills of the principal. The course also includes trust building; understanding of the school community, its demographics and resources; data and information collection; data analysis; judgment; effective communication; consensus development; shared decision-making; effective problem identification and problem solving; organizational development principles, including organizational oversight and implementation; the politics of the principalship; and policy development. The development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that promotes the success of all students and that is shared by the entire school community are studied. The principal as a role model is investigated. Methods of assuring that students, faculty, staff, and school community feel valued and important are pursued. Strategies for recognizing and celebrating student, faculty, and staff accomplishments are reviewed. Candidates also learn that acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner are critical aspects of the successful principal. The idea of leadership style is introduced and candidates analyze their own style. The major theories of motivation and leadership are studied in this course. Candidates are exposed to Habits 1,2,3 of Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The concept of reflection and reflective learning are developed in this course. Educational Administration I includes six hours of school based activity focused on the custodial, maintenance, and safety aspects of managing a school. Ed AD I is considered a part of the Masters program.
